Project Overview

The client indicated that the Mycom Exchanger comprised of two fans on top of the Ammonia Condenser Building was causing vibration issues throughout the building. The equipment was originally installed in 1999 and since had larger fan blades installed which increased the amplitude of the vibrations generated by the air condenser on the entire building structure.
The dynamic response of the building was tuned to offset from the fan operational frequency by increasing the building stiffness in the lateral direction. This was achieved by adding new vertical bracing and replacing the existing inadequate vertical bracing in the east and west walls, in addition to stiffening the condenser supports.

Solution Strategy

  • To investigate the vibration characteristics of the building, when subjected to condenser dynamic loads, by carrying out a time history analysis in FEM software.
  • To design and implement a repair technique and study its impact based on the results of the FEM model.

Scope of Work

Existing mechanical vendor information was analyzed and compared to actual installation in the field to ascertain the dynamic loads being imparted on the building.
A structural analysis was completed of the entire building to allow tuning of the building’s dynamic response and determine the required stiffening.
A construction work package was prepared with the necessary building structural steel modifications, including design of member connections.
Field engineering support was provided during construction, including completion walkdown and as-building.
